Why do we need this section?!
Unfortunately, exchanging money into the Argentine Peso (ARS) is far from simple. But with a bit of careful planning you can use it to your advantage.
We’ve created this section to help guide you through some of the complexities associated with using the Argentine Peso, but please do your own research too. We are no experts, and the economic situation is rapidly changing, particularly with the recent Presential election.
Our summary of what you need to know
Cash
Bring US $ with you. Some places, mostly restaurants, will give you a discount for paying in cash - usually 10%. Therefore, carry some cash to pay in these places. For the best exchange rate, pay in pesos, but they will accept USD too. Tips can only be paid in cash
Taxis
If you take a local taxi, you will also need cash. This isn’t the case for Uber or Cabify - you can use your card on these apps
Card
For everything else, use your card. Whilst we’ve previously given advice to exchange money and pay in pesos, this is no longer true as all exchange rates are now the same
Our Top Tips
1
Cash is king, so pay in cash when you can. Various shops and restaurants will give you a discount for using cash.
2
Avoid paying in advance (so you can pay in cash). Whilst it may not be possible for pre booked items, it's always worth asking.
3
If you have to pay anything online, try to pay in ARS so you can access the MEP on your card.
